The work of art is not the representation of the individual being in any given time, but the representation of the general nature of the thing. ——Heidegger
Chen Hexi, a native of Liuyang, Hunan Province, was born in October 1953. Graduated from the oil painting department of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in January 1982. In 1993, he graduated from the research scholar class of Hunan University Teacher Training Center. At present, he is a professor, doctoral supervisor, vice chairman of Hunan Normal University, member of China Artists Association and director of China Oil Painting Association.
In Chen Hexi’s oil paintings, there are ordinary scenes such as farmhouses, fields, woods and ponds. But he said, “you can’t find the same place on the earth as I do in my paintings, because I painted the beautiful scenery in my mind.” He said that when he painted landscapes, he did not rely on sketching or photos. I put the scenery in my mind, the beautiful things in different places, into one picture.
Place your own corner, a spiritual home. Constantly give up, constantly seek new, do not adhere to the limitations of the objective landscape, subjective creation. The combination of the color technique of oil painting and the composition of the artistic conception of Chinese painting endows oil painting with a kind of artistic conception of “high, deep and secluded“.
